History and culture of Karlovac
The city of Karlovac was founded in 1579th. Primary was founded as a fortress at the protection of the Turkish conquest, in the plain at the confluence of the Kupa, Korana, beneath the ancient ruins of Dubovac. The name comes from Austrian Archduke Karl. It is built according to the ideas of the Renaissance ideal of a six-pointed star with a central square and streets that intersect at right angles.
To 1693. Karlovac was under military rule, and then receives limited government. At 1776th year Karlovac become a free royal city.
During the 18th and 19 century, Karlovac was know as one of the richest and most developed Croatian cities, largely thanks to a booming trade.
At the beginning of Civil war in Croatia the city was occupied. Town and it's surrounding area are definitely liberated 7th August 1995.
