Church of St.Donat is a symbol of the city of Zadar
, and the most famous monumental buildings in Croatia from the early Middle Ages (9th century). It is round Romanesque church until the 15th century church called St. Trinity, and since then named St. Donat, by the bishop who had it built. The first time the church is mentioned in the 10th century in the writings of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus.
Because of the peculiar form, Church of St.Donat is one of the most important of its kind in Europe. By type of construction follows the forms of churches, the court circular layout of the early Byzantine and Carolingian periods. However, in its monumental rough (height 27 meters), an unusual cylindrical shape and double interior space emphasizes the originality, without any direct model.
